I’ve said this before, and I’ll happily say it again.
The book usually wins.
Not because the adaptation is always bad.
Sometimes it’s brilliant.
Sometimes it introduces thousands of new people to a story that deserves every bit of the attention.
But…
There is something magical about meeting the characters on the page first.
Imagining the world your own way.
Falling in love with the dialogue before somebody else decides how it should sound.
Then watching it all come to life on screen.
It’s like getting to experience your favourite story twice.
And honestly?
That’s the best kind of adaptation.
So whether you’re here for obsessive gothic romances, fake dating, college chaos or stories that leave you smiling for absolutely no reason, these are six books I’d recommend reading before pressing play.
🖤 Dark Romance
The books that stay in your head long after you’ve finished them.
Wuthering Heights — Emily Brontë
📖 Read it because…
If you’ve only experienced Wuthering Heights through adaptations, prepare yourself.
The book is darker.
Stranger.
And far more emotionally complicated.
Heathcliff and Catherine aren’t written to be relationship goals.
They’re messy.
Obsessive.
Self-destructive.
And that’s exactly what makes them unforgettable.
This isn’t a romance that asks you to admire its characters.
It asks you to understand them.
Which somehow makes the story even more fascinating.
🎬 Watch it because…
Jacob Elordi.
Margot Robbie.
Emerald Fennell.
Honestly, that combination had readers talking long before filming even began.
The adaptation embraces the gothic atmosphere beautifully and has introduced a whole new audience to one of literature’s most iconic love stories.
But…
Read the novel first.
The emotional experience is completely different.
Twisted Love — Ana Huang
📖 Read it because…
If BookTok had a hall of fame…
This series would absolutely be in it.
Alex Chen is exactly the kind of romance hero people either adore or spend hours arguing about online.
Ava is warm, hopeful and somehow manages to challenge him in ways nobody else can.
The chemistry builds slowly.
The tension actually earns its payoff.
And once you finish the first book, there’s a very good chance you’ll immediately reach for the rest of the series.

🎬 Watch it because…
Netflix has officially confirmed the adaptation.
Which means two things are inevitable.
The casting debates.
And thousands of people saying:
“The book was better.”
So do yourself a favour.
Read it now.
Then you can join the conversations with complete confidence.
Verity — Colleen Hoover
📖 Read it because…
This is not the Colleen Hoover most people expect.
It’s unsettling.
Psychological.
And the kind of book that makes you question absolutely everything by the final chapter.
You’ll probably finish it in one sitting.
Then immediately text somebody:
“Have you read this?”
Because you desperately need to discuss that ending.
Without spoilers, obviously.
🎬 Watch it because…
Anne Hathaway.
Dakota Johnson.
Josh Hartnett.
Honestly…
The casting alone has people excited.
The film seems to lean further into the psychological thriller side of the story, which actually feels like the right choice.
Still…
Read first.
Trust me on this one.
🌸 Cute Romance
The books that leave you smiling long after the final page.
The Love Hypothesis — Ali Hazelwood
📖 Read it because…
Fake dating.
Grumpy meets sunshine.
Academic chaos.
Excellent banter.
This book somehow took one of the most overused romance tropes and made it feel fresh again.
The chemistry feels effortless.
The humour genuinely lands.
And it’s the sort of romance that keeps making you say:
“One more chapter.”
Until suddenly it’s 1 AM.
🎬 Watch it because…
Lili Reinhart as Olive feels like genuinely inspired casting.
The story already reads like a romantic comedy, so seeing it on screen feels like the natural next step.
I’m cautiously optimistic.
Which is basically the highest compliment I can give an adaptation before it’s released.
Off Campus — Elle Kennedy
📖 Read it because…
If sports romance is your thing…
Welcome.
This series is ridiculously addictive.
Every book follows a different couple, but somehow they all make Briar University feel like somewhere you’d happily spend a semester.
The banter is fantastic.
The friendships are just as entertaining as the romance.
And once you’ve read The Deal, you’re probably not stopping there.
🎬 Watch it because…
Prime Video captures the college atmosphere surprisingly well.
It’s messy.
Dramatic.
Romantic.
Exactly the energy fans were hoping for.
Still…
The books have more room to let the relationships breathe.
Which is why I’d always recommend reading first.
Heartstopper — Alice Oseman
📖 Read it because…
Some books don’t rely on huge dramatic moments.
They simply make you care.
Nick and Charlie’s story is gentle, hopeful and quietly emotional in a way that’s become increasingly rare.
Even if you’ve already watched the series, the graphic novels offer something different.
More intimate.
More reflective.
And absolutely worth experiencing.
🎬 Watch it because…
Watching Kit Connor and Joe Locke return for one final chapter feels like saying goodbye to old friends.
Few adaptations have captured the heart of their source material as beautifully as Heartstopper.
Thankfully…
This looks like it’s ending exactly the way it deserves to.
✨ Final Thoughts
I don’t actually think books and adaptations should compete.
They’re different experiences.
Sometimes the book gives you more depth.
Sometimes the adaptation gives you unforgettable performances.
Sometimes both become favourites for completely different reasons.
But if I have the choice?
I’ll always read first.
Because there’s something special about meeting the characters on the page before the screen introduces them.
