ARIS
“What is the one thing we crave most in life?” the speaker asked, pausing just long enough to own the silence. “Stability.”
The word echoed through the auditorium like it had weight. According to her, stability was built through passion, through emotional investment, through love. Nothing in this world, she said, survives without it. The audience applauded before she even finished her final sentence. I didn’t.
Isabel had mastered the art of sounding profound. The pauses. The softened tone. The slight shift in accent when she said something vulnerable. As we stepped out of the auditorium, my friend exhaled dramatically beside me.
“Don’t you think she’s incredible? I feel so motivated.”
I adjusted the strap of my bag. “Just because someone performs emotion convincingly doesn’t mean the argument is strong.”
She stopped walking. “Why are you like this, Miss Aris Laurent? Emotions aren’t prison. Not everyone lives on bullet points.”
I didn’t answer. We both worked in tech — high salaries, clean systems, predictable outcomes. The only real difference between us was this: she believed in passion as a foundation. I believed in structure. I don’t get how people achieve things without having structure in their life. “Go with the flow” are words that are banned from my dictionary.
When you think about life there are so many amazing things surrounding you that just makes you wonder how much struggle and passion they would’ve had to build something like this. Currently we have everything at the click of a button because of the luxury of technology and I adore it, everything that we invent now is based on codes, structure, innovation and one simple mistake, huh! Everything just falls apart. This concept is like relationships, you do everything you can to build it but one single mistake shatters everything just like a mirror.
Emotions are something that are layered like an onion, in the start of dating you’re shy, you’re conscious of what to say and you have prepared everything in your mind on how to behave and present yourself just in case there is a spark and you hit it off. But my problem is if you’re just showing what you want to shadow then what is the point of dating, you might as well be on a dating site swiping left and right and honestly these dating apps should be put together and we should ask the question on “what’s left?”.Unless there was a controlled environment. A space to test compatibility before committing to it. To create love deliberately, most people might find it baffling but for me maybe it isn’t such a bad idea.
