There are weeks when you open Netflix, scroll for twenty minutes, open Prime Video, scroll for another ten…
…and somehow end up rewatching something you’ve already seen.
Not this week.
The August 25–31 OTT lineup has managed to cover almost every possible mood.
Want family comedy? Done.
A Korean mystery where absolutely nobody should be trusted? Obviously.
Something romantic and sun-drenched? We have that too.
And if your preferred evening entertainment involves murder investigations, conspiracies and ordinary people having extraordinarily terrible days…
You’re particularly well catered for.
So before another evening disappears into “What should we watch?”, here are six new shows and movies worth putting on your list this week.
Series — New Seasons & New Obsessions
Because apparently we’re committing several evenings to this.
1. Beauty in Black — Season 3
Netflix · Drama · Final Season · August 27
The “I’ve come this far, I NEED to know how it ends” watch
Tyler Perry’s drama returns for its third and final season, and if you’ve been following Kimmie’s story from the beginning, this is the payoff you’ve been waiting for.
Season 2 left her in a very different position from where she started, and now the cosmetics empire, the trafficking operation and the women caught between both worlds are heading towards their final reckoning.
In other words?
Nobody appears to be getting a peaceful ending without earning it first.
And honestly, after two seasons of chaos, would we expect anything else?
If you’ve already been watching, Season 3 is an obvious addition to this week’s list.
If you’re completely new to the series, I’d still start from Season 1 if you have the time. Some dramas are significantly more satisfying when you know exactly how much everyone has been through to get here.
Watch this if: You like messy power dynamics, complicated characters and finales where you need answers.
2. Chumbak — Season 1
Netflix · Feel-Good Comedy · New Series · August 28
The “finally, something I can watch with the family” pick
The names behind this one immediately got my attention.
Aatish Kapadia and JD Majethia—the team behind Sarabhai vs Sarabhai and Khichdi—return with a comedy about five Mumbai families whose lives are so intertwined that the distinction between friends and family has basically disappeared.
Which sounds lovely.
And also potentially exhausting.
Neena Gupta and Sumeet Vyas lead the ensemble, and if the creators bring even some of that classic Indian sitcom magic to streaming, this could become one of those rare shows that works across generations.
Warm.
Chaotic.
Funny.
And hopefully filled with characters who interfere in each other’s lives with absolutely no understanding of the phrase personal boundaries.
Basically…
Family.
Watch this if: You’ve been craving an easy Indian comedy that doesn’t need murders, conspiracies or emotional devastation to keep you interested.
3. Mousetrap
Netflix · Korean Mystery Thriller · New Series · August 28
The “maybe don’t trust anybody” watch
Imagine waking up one morning and discovering somebody has stolen your identity.
Not your password.
Not your credit card.
Your entire identity.
That’s where Mousetrap begins.
A reclusive writer suddenly finds his life taken away from him, and the only person who might be able to help him get it back is a ruthless loan shark.
Naturally.
Because apparently there were no friendly librarians available.
Based on the Korean webtoon Field Mouse, the series stars Ryu Jun-yeol and Sul Kyung-gu and looks built around exactly the sort of psychological cat-and-mouse tension Korean thrillers do exceptionally well.
And this one isn’t here to give you a cute romance subplot every fifteen minutes.
It’s here to make you suspicious of everyone.
Watch this if: You like Korean dramas but want tension, mystery and psychological games rather than romance.
Movies — One Evening, One Story
Choose according to your current emotional bandwidth.
4. The Last Sunrise
Prime Video · Romantic Drama · August 26
The “beautiful location + romance = I’m listening” movie
Ry arrives in Mallorca with her mother for what should simply be a summer away.
Then she meets a local boy.
Of course she does.
Because nobody in a romantic drama has ever travelled somewhere beautiful and successfully avoided developing feelings.
But The Last Sunrise has something heavier underneath its sun-drenched setting.
Ry is living with a chronic illness, and her relationship becomes part of a larger story about time—how much of it we have, what we do with it and whether knowing something can’t last makes it less meaningful.
Add complicated family dynamics and a business conflict between their families, and suddenly the dreamy summer romance has considerably more emotional baggage.
Eva Longoria produces, and this feels like the pick for the night when you want something romantic without necessarily wanting something fluffy.
Watch this if: You want romance, beautiful scenery and the possibility of unexpectedly staring at the credits afterwards.
5. Babita Singh Reporting
Prime Video · Hindi Crime Drama · August 28
The “her personal life was already complicated enough” movie
Imagine visiting your in-laws.
Already stressful.
Now add a murder investigation.
Nimisha Sajayan plays an underestimated police officer who finds herself investigating a murder while simultaneously beginning to uncover uncomfortable truths inside her own marriage.
So essentially…
Work problems 🤝 personal problems.
The interesting part is how those two investigations begin tightening around each other—the professional mystery she’s supposed to solve and the personal one she never expected to have.
And Nimisha Sajayan is exactly the kind of performer who can make that internal tension as compelling as the crime itself.
Watch this if: You like your mysteries character-driven, grounded and slightly uncomfortable.
6. I, Nobody
JioHotstar · Malayalam Thriller · August 25
The “wrong place, wrong time, VERY wrong people” movie
Rajeevan is an ordinary government employee.
He goes to work.
He has a family.
He lives a normal life.
And then he sees something he was never supposed to see.
There goes the week.
Suddenly he’s branded a troublemaker, hunted by people with significantly more power than he has and desperately trying to protect his family while figuring out who he can actually trust.
Prithviraj Sukumaran and Parvathy Thiruvothu lead the film, directed by Nissam Basheer.
And the premise works precisely because Rajeevan isn’t an action hero.
He’s just a normal person trapped in circumstances that keep getting worse.
Which somehow makes a thriller considerably more stressful.

Watch this if: You like Malayalam thrillers where the tension comes from ordinary people being pushed way beyond what they thought they could handle.

Start with Chumbak.
Want something that makes you say “okay, ONE more episode” at midnight?
Mousetrap.
Want romance with feelings attached?
The Last Sunrise.
Want a Hindi mystery?
Babita Singh Reporting.
Want a proper thriller night?
I, Nobody.
And if you’ve already invested two seasons in Beauty in Black?
You know you’re watching Season 3.
There was never really a decision to make.
This Week’s Watchlist Verdict
What I like about this week’s releases is that there isn’t one obvious genre dominating everything.
You can start the week with a thriller.
Switch to something funny when work has exhausted your remaining brain cells.
Watch a romance when you want something softer.
And save the murder investigation for the weekend when staying up until 1 AM feels slightly more defensible.
That’s basically my definition of a successful streaming week.
Now the only remaining problem is choosing what gets the first click.
