But watching two fictional people spend 300 pages pretending they absolutely cannot stand each other?
That’s entertainment.
Give me the eye rolls.
Give me the sarcastic comments.
Give me the “there’s only one bed” panic.
Give me the fake relationship where they’re supposedly acting in love… while everyone around them quietly realises they’re the only two who haven’t figured it out yet.
Because the best romance books aren’t built on love at first sight.
They’re built on tension.
The kind that makes you read “just one more chapter.”
The kind that has you highlighting banter, rereading conversations and smiling every time the characters accidentally get a little too close.
Whether it’s enemies forced to work together or two strangers pretending to date for reasons that somehow always make sense in romance novels, these books prove one thing:
The slowest burns usually leave the biggest impact.
So if you’re looking for enemies-to-lovers romances, fake dating books and enough unresolved tension to keep you awake far past your bedtime, here are six books I’d recommend without hesitation.
Enemies to Lovers
Because love is apparently much more interesting after a little emotional warfare.
The Hating Game — Sally Thorne
The “they’re definitely in love but refuse to admit it” book
Lucy and Joshua work together.
They share an office.
They compete over everything.
And they have somehow turned mild workplace irritation into an Olympic sport.
The banter is fantastic.
The chemistry is ridiculous.
And every sarcastic conversation somehow makes the tension even worse.
This is one of those romances where you’re practically begging the characters to communicate.
Then immediately hoping they don’t because the arguing is far too entertaining.

A Little Hatred — Joe Abercrombie
The “these people have actual reasons to hate each other” book
Not every enemies-to-lovers story is playful.
Some are genuinely messy.
This fantasy has politics, war, complicated loyalties and relationships built on real conflict instead of simple misunderstandings.
The romance isn’t the entire story.
But when does it appear?
It feels earned.
Perfect if your version of romance includes swords, morally grey characters and people making terrible decisions.
From Bad to Cursed — Lana Harper
The “magic makes everything more complicated” book
Small town.
Magic.
Two people who would very much prefer not to spend time together.
Unfortunately for them…
Life has other plans.
This is light, funny and incredibly easy to read.
The romance builds naturally, the humour lands well and before you realise it you’re halfway through the book wondering why you ever planned to sleep.
Fake Dating
Because pretending is always easier… until it isn’t.
The Unhoneymooners — Christina Lauren
The “this fake honeymoon feels suspiciously real” book
Imagine being forced to go on someone else’s honeymoon…
With the one person you cannot stand.
That’s the premise.
And yes.
It’s exactly as entertaining as it sounds.
The arguments are funny.
The chemistry is obvious to literally everyone except the main characters.
And watching them slowly realise what’s happening is half the fun.
One of my favourite fake dating romances.
Act Your Age, Eve Brown — Talia Hibbert
The “grumpy meets complete chaos” book
Eve arrives like a tornado.
Jacob has his life planned down to the minute.
Naturally…
Nothing goes according to plan.
This book has fantastic banter, genuinely lovable characters and one of those romances where every interaction somehow gets better than the last.
Also, Eve might be one of the funniest romance heroines I’ve read in a long time.
The Fine Print — Lauren Asher
The “he’s impossible and somehow that’s the problem” book
A billionaire CEO.
An employee who refuses to be impressed.
A fake relationship.
An alarming amount of unresolved tension.
Lauren Asher knows exactly how to write slow burn.
Every conversation feels like it’s leading somewhere.
Every interaction raises the stakes.
And by the time the romance finally pays off, you’ll understand why everyone keeps recommending this series.
✨ Final Thoughts
Maybe it’s because instant romance feels too easy.
Or maybe it’s because we secretly enjoy watching fictional people make their own lives dramatically more complicated.
Either way…
Enemies-to-lovers and fake dating remain two of my favourite romance tropes.
Give me the banter.
Give me the longing looks.
Give me two people insisting they feel absolutely nothing while everyone around them quietly disagrees.
I’ll read it every single time.
