“YOU OWE ME…”
ANAYA
I think having a time bomb in your chest should be a thing. Because I woke up the next morning straight into a nightmare.
I woke up and realised that I created a huge blunder yesterday. All the moments of yesterday’s engagement party were coming back to me. And within all of that chaos in my head my heart started beating faster, there was no way of coming back from what I did and you know what I blame champagne for this.
I woke up with exactly three problems.
One—
my mother had sent me six messages before 9 AM.
Two—
Rhea thought the situation was hilarious.
And three—
Veer Malhotra still didn’t know he was engaged to me.
That one felt administrative.
I stared at my coffee for a full minute.
Black.
Strong.
Useless.
The memory of last night returned slowly.
My mistake.
Engaged.
Such a violent word.
I should’ve picked something smaller.
Dating.
I’m interested.
Emotionally confused.
Anything else.
Instead—
I had publicly assigned myself a fiancé.
And unfortunately—
He was real.

I had to calm down because if I have to solve this I need a plan. I took a deep breath to check my mom’s messages. There was so much she wanted immediately.
Send us a picture?
What is his name?
Do we know him?
Is he from Delhi?
We should invite him on Friday?
Does his family know?
Another ping came in and frustrated me. I checked my phone again. Was it rhea?
She had sent me laughing emojis taking my situation as a source of entertainment.
“Stop it Rhea.” I texted.
“Engaged? Seriously anaya, you haven’t even thought about dating. The only thing in your priority could be a one night stand.”
“I had too much champagne, I got frustrated at all the aunties looking at me like I was a predator. So it just came out of my mouth that I was engaged.”
“Tell me what you were thinking, you know that until you tell the name of an actual person of existence it is not going to be possible.” she texted.
“Actually, at the party when I saw Veer it came out of my mouth. He doesn’t know we’re engaged yet but I know I will handle this situation.”
“Veer? Are you serious? He will never agree to do this.”
After looking at that last message I just dropped my phone. I put a pillow over my face and screamed my lungs out.
Ugh! I’m never drinking champagne again.

First things first, I had to choose what my plan could be next. I can create a fake breakup but it will be tough to convince.
Option two- convince Veer which almost seems impossible unless I beg him.
It was easier to create a breakup than deal with all of this but the problem is that now my family and social circles are involved. Too many people know that I’m engaged to someone and if this engagement goes down the society will almost ruin my family.
All I know is I have to act fast and it has to be now. Being in south Delhi my whole life I knew where I could find Veer at this point.
I got ready in a jiffy and headed to the elite members club.
I braced myself before entering the cafe inside the club. And there he was.
White shirt.
Dark watch.
Cold expression on his face.

VEER
You sounded dramatic on call.
What’s going on?
She came in like a jittering monkey running from a predator.
Pink dress.
Nervous expression.
Delicate jewellery with a shot of panic.

ANAYA
“I need a favour.”
“That already sounds expensive.”
“It’s temporary.”
“That sounds worse.”
She finally says it.
Fast.
Like removing a bandage.
“My family thinks we’re engaged.”
Pause.
Veer looks at her.
No reaction.
None.
Which somehow makes it more humiliating.
“Interesting.”
“That’s your response?”
“I’m still processing the psychological breakdown.”
“Look I know that this is not the situation you’re looking for and I’m not asking you to go too serious just be with me until we find a solution for this.”
“ Do you hear yourself?”
“Yes, I do, and I sound ridiculous. But just think of it as a win win.”
“How so?”
“We both are being harassed by the entire south delhi to move forward in our life, settle down and so for now if we get together, make a plan and convince that we’re both not marriage material, no one would ever tell us anything.”
“So, what do you think?” I asked.

He smirked, almost laughed and all my hopes shattered in that moment.
“Are you laughing at me?”
And he says:
“Internally. Respectfully.”
“I would have considered this maybe. But something in my flashbacks tells me this will be a disaster.”
“That was specific, we’ve never met briefly.”
“He took a sip of his coffee.”
I panicked so confidently that everything in my current life feels like a mistake.
VEER
She was so desperate yet so scared that her life was going to fall apart. But I was in it for the play and so looking at her twinkling brown eyes.
Looking at her I said:
“Absolutely not,” with a very calm expression.
She hurriedly raised from her chair and left

THEN—
his phone buzzes.
A message from his mother:
Heard you’re engaged.
Silence.
Veer leans back slightly.
Look toward the direction Anaya left.
And for the first time—
he smiles.
