There are some shows and movies you casually watch.
And then there are the ones that:
mentally trap you destroy your sleep schedule and leave you staring at the ceiling afterwards questioning humanity
This list is for the second category.
These are not:
- light comfort watches
- “play in the background” shows
- or something you casually watch while folding laundry
No.
These are the kind of dark thrillers where:
👉 every episode feels uncomfortable
👉 every character needs therapy
👉 and somehow you still can’t stop watching
So if you’re in the mood for:
- psychological chaos
- disturbing tension
- morally questionable people
- and stories that get under your skin
Here are my picks.
📺 SHOWS
Baby Reindeer
Platform: Netflix
The “this feels way too real” thriller

This show is deeply uncomfortable.
Not because it relies on dramatic jump scares or shocking twists…
but because it feels painfully human.
It explores:
- obsession
- trauma
- manipulation
- loneliness
in a way that slowly gets heavier with every episode.
And honestly?
That’s what makes it terrifying.
You keep thinking:
👉 “surely this can’t get worse.”
And somehow…
it does.
This is not an easy binge.
But it is an impossible one to stop.
Mindhunter
Platform: Netflix
The “quiet conversations somehow feel horrifying” show

This show proves that you do not need constant action to make people uncomfortable.
Because somehow:
👉 two people sitting in a room talking
feels more terrifying than most horror movies.
The story follows FBI agents interviewing serial killers to understand how their minds work.
And the disturbing part?
👉 how calm everything feels.
The writing is brilliant.
The tension is slow and intelligent.
And every interview feels like you’re getting a little too close to something dark.
Also, this show deserved more seasons and I’m still not over it.
🎬 MOVIES
The Platform
Platform: Netflix
The “what kind of nightmare is this?” movie

This movie is stressful.
Like genuinely stressful.
A vertical prison.
A platform of food descending floor by floor.
And people are slowly losing their minds.
That’s the setup.
But underneath all the chaos, this movie is really about:
👉 greed
👉 survival
👉 human behaviour
And honestly?
Watching people become more brutal with every level is deeply disturbing.
You finish this movie feeling:
- uncomfortable
- slightly angry
- and very aware of humanity’s problems
Which means…
it did its job perfectly.
Gone Girl
Platform: Disney+ Hotstar / Amazon Prime Video (varies)
The “trust nobody” masterpiece

This movie is manipulative in the BEST way.
Every time you think you understand what’s happening…
👉 it changes direction.
Marriage.
Media.
Public perception.
Control.
Everything in this movie feels sharp and dangerous.
And Rosamund Pike?
Absolutely terrifying.
The tension in this movie is not loud.
It’s controlled.
Cold.
Calculated.
Which somehow makes it even worse.
Honestly one of the best thrillers to exist.
Final Thoughts
Dark thrillers are dangerous because they make you say:
👉 “just one more episode.”
Meanwhile:
- it’s suddenly 3 AM
- your brain is overstimulated
- and now you trust absolutely nobody
But honestly?
That’s part of the experience.
Because sometimes the best shows aren’t the comforting ones.
Sometimes they’re the ones that:
👉 unsettle you
👉 consume your entire weekend
👉 and refuse to leave your head afterwards
So tell me —
which dark thriller completely messes with your brain…
or which one should I dangerously add to my watchlist next? 👀
