BOOKS LIKE “SURVIVAL OF THE THICKEST”

Ah! Survival of the Thickest — this show made me believe that anything is possible if you’re just a little witty, confident, and emotionally strategic. I laughed, felt senti, and almost cried. It was a full rollercoaster.

After a devastating breakup, Mavis Beaumont decides to rebuild her life as a fashion stylist in New York City. The show beautifully captures her journey as a Black, plus-sized woman building a space for herself in fashion — and in love — with the help of her fiercely loyal friends. It’s fresh, comic, emotional, and honestly everything you need when you’re feeling low.

But my book lovers, why always watch when your imagination can run wild with characters of your own?

Here are 3 books I loved that serve women empowerment, romance gone haywire (but with a happy ending), and bold, witty humour for the perfect comfort read.

MAKEUP BREAKUP – LILY MENON

Two tech rivals. Two completely opposite views on love.

One builds an app for make-up.
The other builds one for breakups.

Hudson Craft believes in penthouses, flashy cars, and highly efficient breakups. He avoids love at all costs and proudly promotes the luxury of single life — hence, his breakup app.

Annika Dev, on the other hand, believes in second chances and forever love. But her app statistics tell a different story — failed relationships everywhere. She works tirelessly to make people believe in love again, and she absolutely hates that her rival’s breakup app is outperforming hers.

Things get messy when they unknowingly have a fling with each other. It gets worse when Hudson moves into the office right next to hers. And it gets competitive when Annika discovers he’s entering the Epic Investment Pitch Contest — the same one she needs to win to save her app.

So what happens when rivalry meets chemistry?
There’s only one way to find out.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT – LINDSEY KELK

Ros Reynolds returns to the UK from Washington, determined to start over. She imagines slipping right back into her old life — family, friends, maybe even her ex.

Reality? Not so simple.

Everyone has moved on. She’s stuck living in a garden shed while her parents rekindle their own romance. While Ros struggles with expectations vs reality, her family and friends add humour to the chaos.

There’s an emotional conversation with her ex that reopens old wounds. Meanwhile, she’s casually seeing someone else — though honestly, he gives strong narcissist energy.

Then her phone starts pinging with messages from her past. Including the number of the man who broke her heart — the one she thought she’d erased for good.

Is this a second chance at love? Or just nostalgia playing tricks?

If you enjoy messy, relatable women in their 30s navigating life, love, and ego bruises — this one’s for you.

THE EX TALK – RACHEL LYNN SOLOMAN

Shay Goldstein has spent over a decade working at Seattle’s public radio station. It’s her comfort zone — until Dominic Yun enters the picture.

Fresh out of a master’s program in journalism, Dominic believes he knows everything about public radio. Shay disagrees. Loudly.

When the station needs fresh content, Shay pitches a bold idea: two exes giving live relationship advice on air. Their boss loves it — and casts Shay and Dominic as the “exes” because of how much they already clash.

Neither wants to lie to listeners. But if they refuse, they risk losing their jobs.

The show exploded in popularity. The ratings climb. The chemistry shifts.

And the deeper the lie grows, the harder it becomes to separate what’s fake from what’s real.

In a career built on honesty, what happens when feelings enter the chat?

Honestly, there is nothing like curling up with a good book when you’re feeling down. It’s a mental vacation. A reset. A reminder that chaos can still end in love.
