REASONS YOU SHOULD TRY MUSIC THERAPY

“ Music is a medicine for your unhinged soul.” – Enchanted Pen. Many of you will surely agree with me on this one and all I can say is that I agree with you. Music is something that defines you as a person, music can soothe you, understand when it’s relatable just one tone and thousand meanings for different people. While we listen to it in our daily lives some use music for working out, some use for meditation, some use them to focus on work and well for dancers it’s their entire story. So supreme yet so underrated, that is music for us. There is always something new to unravel and every one of them has a different feeling which makes me wonder how music therapy helps people? It sounds good but when we see people claim that it can help cure big diseases we become a little sceptical, right?

How does music therapy work? Do they have risks? What are the benefits? And so many more questions. So let’s understand music therapy together and  reasons we should try it.

HOW DOES MUSIC THERAPY WORK?

Have you ever noticed how you play songs according to your mood or on any occasion? If you went through a breakup you play sad songs, if you’re happy it’s your favourite playlist, if it’s a party well it’s anything but a buzz killer, right? Just like that music therapy is used to achieve the needs of a particular individual.

Let’s say you have a problem where you feel you’ve grown cold or that your emotions have grown cold, that will lead you to work on your sensory schools which is developed by listening to you, making you aware of your emotions, making you feel again through the sensory sounds. Or say that you want to work on your communication skills. That can be enhanced by using your vocal sounds like singing or putting your words into a song and slowly having the guts to sing it.

Music therapy benefits all age groups. It’s not just for you to listen to and relax but a powerful tool to calm and heal. Be it physically, emotionally, cognitively, mentally or socially.

WHAT CONDITIONS DOES MUSIC THERAPY MANAGE?

Though music therapy is not a very famous form of curing diseases in the entire world. It does help a lot of serious diseases in a tremendous way. Like music is something that carries memories, calms your tension because just that tone is soothing for you, calms you down when you feel you might just kill someone, keeps you sane when you’re depressed, anxious or having panic attacks. Not just that it can be an effective way of learning or healing pain because of the vibrations. The following list shows what conditions does music therapy manage:

  • Dementia
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Stroke
  • Cancer
  • Autism
  • Anxiety
  • Learning abilities
  • Chronic and acute pain

WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENS DURING MUSIC THERAPY?

We all know that a clap cannot be done with just one hand and so during music therapy you need to participate in various things, obviously considering your feelings.

  • So you can create music with your words or make up songs about what you want to sing, or sing music to communicate what you want to say.
  • Communicate your emotions with tunes by playing an instrument you love
  • Improvise by either singing songs along with your therapist or playing an instrument or you can mix and match.
  • Move with music by dancing and showing your emotions with your body
  • Listen to the music or any recording your mentor creates for you
  • Discuss by reading or listening and discussing what you feel about that song.

RISKS OF MUSIC THERAPY

The only risk prolonged with music therapy is that music is also an emotion and so it can trigger something painful or unexpected memories that you may not want to relive. But if you’re willing to take that risk, no one’s to stop you because what matters to you is healing and smiling.

That’s it folks, these are the reasons you should try music therapy, let me know if you liked this article in the comments section or if there is something that you would like for me to discuss. Although do remember music will always be something that speaks to you whether you like it or not and to make you feel the emotions inside whether you like it or not. In any case it will prove to be one of the best gifts. Anyhoo! All’s well that ends well. I will see you in the next one ! toodeloo!
