YOGA SERIES: THE IMPACT OF YOGA ON YOUR HEALTH

“Welcome to a journey of self-discovery and inner peace, where every stretch and every breath leads to a deeper connection with the self.”

Have you ever thought about why the people in our ancient times were fitter than us? Why didn’t they have much workout but still had the body we all dream for? Or why did they have such good mental health?

Well, there are two practical reasons for this: the first is that our environment has changed drastically, making us more reliant on the internet and a little lazy, thus working out is a must. The second reason is that people in ancient times were always active, present in the moment, and thrived on doing everything themselves, which kept them busy and fit. As a result, it enhanced both their physical and emotional health for most of them.

Both of these perspectives present us with two distinct stories and lifestyles, and for modern times, it all boils down to how to achieve both physical and mental health. That is where yoga comes into play. Most people believe that yoga is too slow and dull, and this is due to our fast-paced lifestyle. We want things to be faster, but for a moment, forget about fast and consider the slow perspective, and learn how yoga impacts your health..

  1. PHYSICAL HEALTH

Yoga is good for your physical health since it makes you feel light. But how exactly? We have to stay and stretch like it hurts. The brilliance of physical yoga is that our bodies are so tight in modern times that even working on a laptop or doing certain physical activities causes us pain. ‘Oh my god, I’ve been sitting in the same posture for so long that my back hurts.’ That’s the most common story I hear these days from most individuals. Of course, letting off steam can be accomplished through a variety of exercises. However, yoga allows you to gradually open up your body and breathe with your eyes closed in order to be present in the moment.

There is nothing wrong with doing different types of exercise. However, the influence of yoga lasts longer because the longer you breathe and feel light in the posture, even if it is only for 20 seconds with full attention, it benefits both your conscious mind and physical health. So you have both physical and mental wellness in the long run.

  1. MENTAL HEALTH

Ahhh… mental wellness. The most common issue that people face in the twenty-first century. With a fast-paced existence and no time for yourself, balancing work and life has become difficult. It’s like if you have to take some time off or a break for yourself, and by then you’re fatigued and don’t know what to do. Or you just workout, blow off some steam for about 30 minutes, get exhausted, and repeat the cycle. So, what can you do about it?

Obviously, it begins with small steps such as scheduling’me time’ for an hour or so every day or so, or going to a person with whom you enjoy chatting, and so on.However, the point is that your mind is never still, and pranayama is a fantastic approach to achieve this. Meditation and mindfulness are difficult to attain, so start slowly by simply being aware of your breathing or laying down in shavasana for a few minutes to calm your mind. It is stated that throughout this practice, your mind will be racing with ideas at first, but once you begin to focus on each breath, you will be able to reconnect with yourself. And you can do it in just 15 minutes a day, which you may gradually expand if you wish.

Interesting fact: Pranayama has a very simple yet deep meaning to it. “Prana” means soul and “Yama” means control and discipline. So with every controlled breath is the knowing of your soul.
